Iron deficiency is usually caused by lack of iron intake that is an important component of hemoglobin. Breast-fed babies can be protected from iron deficiency because breast milk contains iron in sufficient amount that is one reason why breast milk is best food for babies.

In women, pregnancy and menstruation often cause the body's need for iron is increased, in pregnant women need iron daily amount of 2-fold from pre-pregnancy needs to support the needs of the fetus, as well as in women who are menstruating tend to experience a loss of iron.
